Happy New Year! January 2006
In this newsletter, I wanted to tell the story of how I was introduced to chiropractic:
As I sat in the passenger seat of Ambulance #74 in Worcester, Massachusetts, I felt another migraine coming on. It was toward the end of my 12-hour shift on an unbearably hot summer day. My partner quickly rushed me to UMASS Medical Hospital. Upon arrival, a nurse, who explained to me that I needed an IV drug to relieve my symptoms, took me immediately into a dark room on a stretcher. Unfortunately, the drug didn’t take away the symptoms completely, and it also came with nasty side effects: agitation and restlessness. Within the next few days, I made an appointment with my medical doctor. He told me that taking medication was the only way that he could stop my migraines. Not satisfied with that answer, I was determined to find something more pro-active and preventative. My girlfriend at the time (who is now my wife) convinced me to give chiropractic a try: “They treat the cause of the problems, not just the symptoms.” She is a strong believer in chiropractic. Not only had her mother received incredible long-term relief from a disc herniation through chiropractic care, but she, too, had benefited from treatment for a painful back injury. So, I decided to make an appointment with a chiropractor.
Once at the doctor’s office, my chiropractor explained to me that through a gentle and specific adjustment of my spine, he could remove pressure on my nervous system, which was triggering my migraines. He performed a through examination that included taking a history, as well as noting my posture, ranges of motion, and areas of tight and tender muscles. My chiropractor then adjusted my spine, and it did not hurt; in fact, it actually felt good. Within a month of treatment, a reexamination revealed that my spine and nervous system were greatly improved, and all the while I did not experience any further migraines. Chiropractic care improved my quality of life to a significant degree. It was at this time that I decided to become a chiropractor and make a life-long commitment to helping others obtain relief and optimal health in a non-invasive way.
